Often times advertisements convey subliminal messages behind their ads, such as male ads convey the message of masculinity. The hidden messages are the features being used to appeal to the consumer. The purpose of these advertisements is so your convinced enough to buy their products. This lucky Brand advertisement gives off a good example of what masculinity should be.
The product being advertised is clothing, Lucky Brand Jeans. The clothing and the pose captures the readers attention. When i refer to pose the model in the ad has the 'rock pose' which is to be considered strong and dominant. The rock pose is suppose to show that men are fearless while other ads go for a different approach. Most case scenarios the model portraying the rock pose are centered in the ad standing straight with a expression of confidence and intimidation on their face. Usually their not wearing a shirt showing off their muscular body. His body is built and toned. Or in this case the model in my ad has a shirt on but it isn't buttoned all the way to the top therefore his chest is still capable of being seen.
The ad goes on to actually two pages, one having a shot from the chest up with the model looking off into the distance. And the other is where he actually has the rock pose. He's wearing a denim shirt and jeans which is a everyday look for men. Ads usually show specific clothing that screams masculinity. The theme can be considered as ideal life because in the ad it says Lucky You. So basically it appeals to the consumer because when there looking at it people want to feel that confidence that he shows and have his features. Susan Bordo comments that "As embodied in attractive and sometimes highly manipulative images, "men act and women appear" as a visual instruction" (200). However the model in my ad is not acting but appearing.
In the ad his hair, facial hair, weight and skin all appear attractive. Conveying the message that it's perfectly fine for men to be masculine while still looking good and not have that rough and rugged look of a 'bad boy'.Even though in the ad he's not doing much and just appearing there still can be a message behind it. Men arent suppose to like being looked at, its sort of a female thing. But yet the ad is just of posing and looking good doing so.

ReplyDeleteyou can give details about the designs incorporated in your ad. this will bring to life the setting where the action takes place. nonetheless, the supporting points are right on the mark.
ReplyDeleteYour introduction mentions the ingenuity of advertisements, men’s ads and how products are marketed in such a way as to appeal to the consumers. But your thesis, which seems to be the last sentence, needs to specify what type of masculinity Lucky brand is promoting in the ad you chose. In your first paragraph, you seem to be focusing on the clothing the model is wearing, which is also the product. But you only mention the shirt but do not analyze what it means that it is unbuttoned and his chest is visible? Also, you should discuss the pose in a separate paragraph, rather than bring it up in this one. Last but not least, you need to refer to Bordo in this paragraph, as you are borrowing her idea about the rock pose. In the following body paragraph, you discuss or mention several ideas: the design of the ad which takes up two pages, clothing that reflects masculinity, words/the brand’s name in the ad, as well as the model appearing rather than acting. You should try to focus on one idea in each paragraph. If you want to discuss the ad’s design, than analyze the two pages, and the words/brand’s name. The point about model appearing and not acting should be discussed in a paragraph devoted to his pose. You seem to return to this point in your third body paragraph where you also discuss his appearance. Please work on your paragraph structure and develop your analysis of the point about the male model appearing. Do you think this is the new version of masculinity that Lucky is advertising? How would you label this new masculinity? You mention looking good but still being a ‘bad boy’. So is the new masculinity a bad-boy in a good-boy or man’s disguise?
ReplyDeleteyour first draft does base on the topic of men masculinity. your introduction bring a good point about the messange, but you have yet to give the 3 main points in your introduction to help with an effective thesis. your certain these does bring messege to your body paragraphs, but you yet to connect the body paragraph points with the these statement. You did credibility well with describing the ad you are using for men masculine. Very well done and descriptive on the details in the ad. Next, time include the points in the introduction. Also, the models aren't acting, but really posing. Don't forget to add the sentence where after you finish writing about one of your point, to add where you transition that point to the next point leading into your next major point and next body paragraph. Also, in the future sometimes you could leave the reader thinking with something of a messenge and to think about without it being a question. If you could make it into a non-question somehow that would be great. Overall good start and good first draft.
