First Draft - Research Paper

Sometimes when viewing magazines, particularly men magazines we tend to not notice what the media is really trying to portray for us to see. In other words men magazines such as GQ, King, Esquire, just to name a few, provide advertisements that give off a certain message of what masculinity should be. But we fail to realize what they really are. To be masculine is pertaining to men and their characteristics. However not all men are considered masculine. In this paper i will show how GQ uses articles, features, and advertisements to promote masculinity.

Over the years, GQ magazine has provided articles with the same pattern of trying to convey the message of masculinity.

  1. This is incomplete but this is what I'll count as your first draft and assign it points. I'll e-mail you the points for this part of the research paper 1 project this weekend. But I cannot guarantee I'll be able to provide you with substantial feedback. Be aware that the final draft is due on Monday, Nov. 15.

  2. Hi Mikayla.
A.) What is the draft's biggest strength?
I think you have a great way with making a topic engaging and getting someones attention early on. The opening sentence for this paper is pretty good.

    B.)Suggestion(s) for final draft?
Introduction: Try and provide the reader with the major points your gonna discuss in your paper. So as a reader they already know what they can learn and it will kind of direct your body paragraphs. Also try and describe the masculinity GQ displayed during that year and then support it with the sources.
Body Paragraphs: I think you will do fine with this especially since you seem to have a good idea of how to open a paragraph with a strong topic sentence. Just keep the engaging feel about your writing throughout the enitre paper.

Sidenote: Miss B told me about my own paper that I really need to make sure I make good connections betweem my 4 primary sources and my 2 secondary sources, so just keep a look out for that because shes checking for that.

Good Luck with your final draft.

  3. I did GQ for my paper as well so if you need help find sources just let me know. I know of a few articles for secondary sources. The school library site was good for finding magazine articles to use as the 4 primary sources.

  4. Your introduction is engaging and the idea that men's magazines, just like women's magazines, are promoting masculine types is great. Why do "we fail to see what the messages" in men's magazines really are? Your claim, at the end of the introduction does not actually identify a type of masculinity?
The first sentence of you first body paragraph is just as vague? I strongly urge you to actually compose a substantial first draft and e-mail it to me this weekend. I cannot assign this any point value as this does not come close to what the first draft requirements were. Please take this seriously. This first draft is worth 30/40points. Thus far, you have only received 5 points for the peer review.
